Academically, SATIN is one of many textile weaving constructions.

But generally speaking, fabrics shop used to describe those shiny, lustrous fabric with 90gsm weight or above as Satin. It is usually a 1/4, 1/5 or above weaving to give out such gleam.

Variety from soft to stiff, from 90gsm to 240gsm or above, from papery touches to fruitfully handling. Different variety will have a specific naming or type - Charmeuses are light and flowing, Duchess Satins are heavy and rich in handle, Shantungs are filled with slub and have texture.

They are often used on Wedding gowns, Evening gowns, Cocktail dresses, Prom dresses, Couture fashion, or other related fancy-looking accessories (e.g. Handbags or Shoes). Nowadays, large retailing or service-providing enterprises will use Satin or other fancy-looking fabric as the primary material of their working uniform. People will also use Satin to make curtains, bedding or other accessory products.
